Tips on Maintaining Your Wooden Porch Swings
Wooden porch swings are absolutely fantastic additions to any back yard or even front porch if you want outdoor furniture to complement your home. Not only can they add incredible value to your home but you will also find that they can add a sense of well being and relaxation that very few other items of furniture can create.
There is nothing better that relaxing on a porch swing and watching the world go by to just let the stress seep out of you when the opportunity arises. However if you want to continue doing that on the same swing year after year then you need to take the time to maintain it. Believe it or not, this is actually relatively easy. All you have to do is follow the steps below and you will find that you can enjoy your swing as often as you like:
• Make sure that all nuts and bolts are tightened at least once or twice a year because this can cause a wobble or tilt to develop. If this is the case then not only will it not swing properly but it will also become unstable. All you need to do is use a spanner to check all bolts to ensure that they are as tight as possible.
• Make sure that the chain is well oiled and does not stiffen up because this can also prevent wooden swings from doing their job. Rusty chains are not only hazardous but they are also incredibly unsightly and this could potentially ruin the swing itself. If you find that the porch swing chain has started to go rusty then the only way to solve the problem is to replace the chain. Good hardware stores stock replacement chains but you should make sure that you choose the right length before replacing it.
• Check the springs when you check the chain to make sure that they have not gone rusty as well. Springs will also need to be replaced if they are a little worn and can also be purchased at all good hardware stores.
• After you have checked the chain, springs and bolts on your wood swing, you will also need to check the wood to make sure that it is in the best condition possible. After all, any cracks or splinters are actually weaknesses and can cause the swing to degrade over time. Sand down any splinters and cracks, repairing the wood if need be. From there, you should seal the wood using a sealant before varnishing or painting it. The wood should be checked every six months or so and you should never skimp on quality when it comes to the varnishes and paints you use.
As you can see, there is nothing to maintaining a wooden porch swing. All you have to do is schedule a quick check over the swing every six months or so and that is literally the extent of the effort you need to put in. Considering how little it requires you to do, you can get so much more out of your swing.
